Wellbeing
At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff
- programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Our PBL expectation of “At Ferncourt we are responsible, respectful and safe learners” is the basis for all the PBL and wellbeing processes. Respectful and positive relationships are evident and widespread among students, staff and our broader school community and promote student wellbeing to ensure optimum conditions for student learning across the school. This was achieved through respectful communication and the explicit teaching and reflection of school rules and expectations.
When working with students in behaviour management, the importance of relationships should never be underestimated.
“The studies show that the best teacher-student relationships form when the teacher gives strong guidance and shows clear purpose as well as concern for the needs of others and a desire to work as a team.” (Marzano, et al, 2003)
At Ferncourt, all of our teachers build positive relationships with their students by:
· Knowing the name of each student
· Showing an interest in each student
· Knowing the interest/s of students and incorporating this into the daily routine
· Displaying a positive attitude
· Making learning enjoyable
· Teaching with enthusiasm and passion
